Engineering Molecular Group (GEM)

The GEM is a research group of the Univesitat Ramon Llull (URL) that was created in 1988 by the Institut Químic Sarrià (IQS) in order to answer to the technological and training needs of the chemical sector, in particular from a molecular perspective.

GEM'S research is carried out in the fields of medicinal chemistry, biomedicine, photochemistry more than 20 researchers and qualified technical staff and is recognised as a consolidated research group since 2005. Since its inception, it has actively participated in research projects with companies in Spain and overseas, it has held many patents, offered its own technology and has had researchers working in the industrial sector.

Research lines

GEM offers research services and consultancy that includes, as a whole, the design of biologically active molecules, their synthesis and characterisation, the study of physicochemical properties and technical support during the development and application stages.
Its lines of work include:
  • Computational chemistry, molecular modelling and QSAR.
  • Organic synthesis.
  • Combinatorial chemistry.
  • Photochemistry and biomedical applications of light.
  • Infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance.
