Working on cancer treatments in the Koch Institute

In MIT I worked at a different scale, which allowed me to learn about life as a researcher.

Master in Materials Science and Engineering

Elena describes her stay in the MIT as a "fantastic experience where you can learn a lot not only professionally but also personally". She stayed for 10 months in Boston, USA, to do the Master's Thesis in Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

You can read about her complete experience below:

When you plan to spend a year away from home, a thousand doubts come to mind, but in the end, the desire to learn abroad so that you can become a great professional makes up for it.

I chose to do my Master's Thesis in the MIT, in Boston. Once I got there, I joined the Koch Institute, and MIT research centre focused on cancer studies. It is a highly multidisciplinary centre, where they work with different focuses, from materials science to engineering. The goal was to work on treatments against cancer.

My tasks were focused on the materials science area and I was principally in charge of formulating and preparing medicines and how to save them so that they are stable. There were all types of different professionals in the lab, so I could learn about many different topics, like biology.

The MIT ecosystem

Everything about MIT is really impressive. One of the things that surprised me the most was the great level of interaction between companies and the university. Companies have a lot of interest in what the university does and the research projects we work on. The communication and relationship between professors, students and companies is also great. The great interest in science means that there's a lot of investment in the university, both from companies and from donations.

A lot of Spaniards also work in MIT, which makes it much easier to feel like you're part of the university. In fact, there's a Spanish association in MIT where you can get to know people who are in the same situation as you. This makes it so that you don't feel alone.

I have grown a lot at the personal level, I have met many people and I have learned about very different cultures. At the professional level, I got a lot of contacts from MIT, whether from colleagues, companies or professors. I also had a lot of freedom within the project, so I learned how to provide for myself.
