Master in Bioengineering

Jorge Blanco attended the Master in Bioengineering in 2011. Since he finished the programme, the Masters has opened many doors in the industry until he became the Director of Operations of VIVEbiotech.

You can read about Jorge's experience with the Master below and more about his professional career path:

Why did you choose this Master's Degree?

While I was working in the biochemistry department in the university where I studied my degree, the university's chair in biochemistry talked to me about this Master's Degree due to its industrial focus because I knew I wanted to work at the industrial scale.

This Master's Degree gives you the opportunity to focus your career in the industry, it has very strong subjects, like Process Design, where you work with bioreactors. IQS also has a lot of contacts when you do your Master Thesis with an industrial application.

I chose this Master for all these reasons, because the professors are well known in the sector and because of the university's excellent curriculum.

Did you do the Master's Thesis abroad?

I had the opportunity to do the Master Thesis in ATB (the Liebniz Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Bio-economy e.V) in Potsdam, Germany. I did the Master Thesis there and once I finished I stayed a few months more working on other projects until I finished and entire academic year.

My Master Thesis was about the production of lactic acid, which is used to make objects from biodegradable bags to biodegradable devices, for instance.

Did you feel prepared when doing the internships?

Totally. In the Master you put all you learn about the theory into practice. This really prepares you before you head out into the business world. Logically you have to learn new things in each company, but the Master gives you a solid base so that you can develop new skills quickly.

I really don't see much difference between the internships that we do at IQS and the reality in the industry.

How has the Master helped in your career path?

The Master's Programme taught me many engineering topics. I came from the biochemical field and I had more knowledge about processes. In the Master's Programme I was able to learn about topics of scaling, fermenters, bioreactors and purification. At the personal level they teach us to work in a team by creating tense situations similar to the ones you find in the industry. I would say that this Master truly prepares you for the real world. For example, the reports that they teach you here do not differ greatly from the reports that you have to do in companies in the industry.

What would you tell a future student?

I would say that I highly recommend this Master. Although first they have to decide how they want to focus their careers, this Master offers both approaches, both if you want to dedicate yourself to more applied research or if you want to dedicate yourself to the more industrial part. IQS also offers many options to go abroad, something that companies value highly.
