The project

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most malignant form of brain tumor. Current treatments for GBM have very low efficacy due to their incapacity to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and to eliminate resilient cancers stem cells. The goal of the highly interdisciplinary project in which you will participate is to develop smart proteins to target gene nanotherapies capable of overcoming the BBB and eliminating all tumor cells. This research program is co-funded by “La Caixa”, the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions (EU), the Spanish Ministry of Science and the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer.

The main purpose of the PhD proposal offered here is to develop stimulus-sensitive ligands to target the nanocarrier systems and to cross the BBB. Antibody mimetics will be generated combining genetic and chemical approaches. The project will involve protein modelling and engineering, directed evolution, synthetic biology and bioorthogonal click chemistry. Furthermore, you will screen the nanobio-therapeutics in cellular assays and contribute to their evaluation in vivo.

Your profile

  • BSc and MSc degrees in biotechnology or related fields. Chemistry, pharmacy, and nanotechnology backgrounds with knowledge in biology/biomedicine will also be considered.
  • Strong motivation to conduct interdisciplinary science and learn diverse techniques in protein engineering, chemical biology, nanotechnology, cellular assays and in vivo studies.
  • Capacity to work independently and in a team, creativity, excellent communication skills, and fluency in English will be greatly valued.
  • Experience in protein engineering is preferred but not required.
  • Strong academic record will be a plus.
