GQBB is an interdisciplinary research group to undertake translational research projects from a molecular approach to applications in the fields of industrial biotechnology (biocatalysis and bioprocesses) and biomedicine (therapeutic targets, drug discovery, biomaterials).

  1. The significance of Carbohydrate Active Enzymes (CAZymes) as therapeutic targets and the design and selection of ligands as drug candidates in infectious diseases (i.e. glycosyltransferases).
  2. The potential of CAZYmes as biocatalysts for the production of functionalized oligo- and polysaccharides as novel biomaterials or bioactive carbohydrate derivatives for biomedical applications (i.e. glycosynthases and esterases).
  3. The development of metabilic engineering platforms (E.coli, yeast, and microalgae) incorporating the target CAZYmes for the production of high-value metabolites.
  4. Development and application of bioinformatic and modeling tools to assist protein engineering design.
