European students

Students belonging to a Member State of the European Union (EU), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein who wish to reside in Spain for a period of six months or longer must handle certain formalities:

• Registration in the municipal registry (empadronamiento) of the town in which you live. You must request this certificate as soon as possible, after you have found your definitive accommodation.
• Registration in the European Union citizens registry: you must request this once you have completed your registration in the municipal registry (empadronamiento) to obtain a certificate with your Spanish Foreign Resident Identification Number (NIE). You won't ever need to renew your NIE. Among other things, this number (NIE) will make it possible for you to open a bank account, carry out internships, and more.
