• PhD position offered at the Laboratory of Biochemistry I

We are seeking a highly motivated graduate student with a master`s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or related areas, and with an excellent academic record.

The student must show experience in bioinformatics and molecular modelling, and a strong interest in research to pursue a PhD in the context of the project funded GLYCODESIGN by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, and within the objective: COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY TO ASSIST PROTEIN ENGINEERING PROGRAMS.

Research topic

Enzyme engineering has enabled unprecedented expansion of the enzyme repertoire generating novel biocatalysts endowed with desirable physical and catalytic properties. Computer-aided enzyme design methods are being developed to accelerate enzyme engineering addressed to improve stability, alter substrate specificity and regio/stereo-selectivity, enhance catalytic performance or even catalyze new-to-nature reactions.

In our group we develop and apply methodologies based on structural bioinformatics and molecular modelling to assist experimental protein design of carbohydrate active enzymes by site-directed mutagenesis or directed evolution approaches. One of our algorithms allows detecting positions along a protein structure sensible to the binding of new substrates.

At this point, the PhD candidate will be enrolled to expand this algorithm by:

  • Introducing new metrics and scoring functions to evaluate other properties such as reactivity and/or protein stability in non-natural conditions,
  • Implementing new search strategies of the protein sequence space to account for cooperative effects of multiple mutations.
