The project will investigate poverty and development traps in China based on human capital accumulation. It will also investigate the relationship between human capital and social inequalities including health and the environment.

Key responsibilities

  • The doctoral researcher will be working within the Department of Quantitative Methods at the IQS School of Management. The doctoral researcher is expected to contribute to research projects in the area of Development Economics.
  • The candidate’s main task will be to prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of Development Economics, under the supervision of Professor Octasiano Valerio. The thesis work will be undertaken at Universitat Ramon Llull, but can also be jointly-supervised with another university.
  • Contribute to the teaching of classes ranging from one to three hours per week.

Experience, knowledge, skills & selection criteria

Must Have – Required:

  • Experience: Master degree in Economics, or similar, with a strong focus on quantitative methods. The graduation should ideally be not more than three years ago.
  • Research: The researcher must have demonstrated expertise in the Chinese Economy in articles or Master Thesis.
  • Knowledge: The researcher must be proficient in oral and written English; knowledge of Chinese is also highly evaluated.

Desirable skills:

  • Interest in applied economic research.
  • have a strong background in applied microeconomics and econometrics as well as a good knowledge of programming.
  • proficiency in statistical software, such as Stata, R, Matlab, or similar.
  • very good (proposal) writing and presentation skills
  • ability to work independently and as a member of a team; she/he must be creative, flexible, and eager to learn and to expand his /her scientific network.
  • motivated, enthusiastic, positive person.

  • Compensation: The scholarship covers tuition fees and a gross salary of €16,000/year approx. (full time).
