Academic standards

The General Standards of Organisation for Doctorates at Ramon Llull University establish the framework for the PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programme.

The specific adaptation of these standards for doctoral programs at IQS is set out in the Standards for Doctoral Studies at IQS.

Duration of the PhD programme and maintaining good standing

Doctoral studies last for a maximum duration of three full-time years, starting from the doctoral student’s initial date of enrolment to the programme up to the date of their doctoral thesis submission.

If a student's request to submit their doctoral thesis has not been filed within this three-year period, the Doctoral Programme Academic Committee (CAPD) may authorise the extension of this period for one additional year, which may be exceptionally extended for an additional year.

Part-time doctoral studies may be carried out solely if authorised by the CAPD beforehand. Part-time studies may last for a maximum duration of five years from the student's date of admission to the programme up to the date of their doctoral thesis submission.

Extensions for part-time studies may be authorised for two more years and another additional year exceptionally.

For the purposes of calculating this period, absences due to illness, maternity, paternity, or any other cause envisaged by current legislation are not taken into account.

In addition, doctoral students can request temporary disenrollment from the programme for a maximum period of one year, which can be extended by up to one more year. This request must be justified and addressed to the CAPD, which will decide on whether or not to accept the request within a maximum period of two months.

Academic calendar

Candidates for the doctoral programme can apply and be admitted at any time during the academic year.

Initial enrolment in the doctoral programme can be done at any time during the academic year. Subsequent enrolments must be done at the beginning of each academic year. The annual assessment of doctoral students is done during the month of July.

Students can submit their request to defend their doctoral thesis to the CAPD and conduct their defence at any time during the academic year. The Doctoral Programme Academic Committee's regular meeting takes place once a month.

Students can submit their request to defend their thesis with the Ramon Llull University Doctoral Committee at any time during the academic year.

Learning resources

The PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programme is taught at the IQS School of Engineering facilities, boasting a total size of 16,649 m2. The facilities are adapted for people with physical disabilities to be able to go to any office or room to which they may need to access. In cases where adapting spaces to these needs has not been possible due to structural reasons, workspaces have been moved and the plan is to continue doing so to areas where accessibility is not an issue.

Resources available to students in the PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programme include:

Virtual communication spaces

All members of the IQS community have access to the Internet, email, and access to platforms to support in-person learning, academic affairs, and managing research activities.

All members of the center have access to the Internet, e-mail and access to platforms to support face-to-face training, academic management and management of research activities.

Laboratories

The IQS School of Engineering has 5,100 m2 of laboratories equipped with a wide range of instruments to meet research needs in the areas of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.

Library

The IQS library provides both printed and electronic documentary resources to professors and students to support the learning process, teaching, research, innovation, and continuing education for the IQS academic and research community. The bibliographic and documentary collection includes over 65,000 volumes and around 3,600 periodicals and covers the following subject areas: chemistry, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, food science and technology, the environment, materials science, industrial hygiene and safety, biotechnology, and pharmacy and economics, business management, and ethics.

Internal quality assurance system

The PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programme has strategic quality policies and internal quality assurance systems in place in order to ensure that the educational objectives of the programme are achieved.

The Quality, Academic, and Teaching Innovation Unit at Ramon Llull University (UQIAD-URL) is based on networking with the quality units/areas at the centres and departments and supporting, coordinating, and reviewing the evaluation processes for academic areas and professors in order to contribute to guaranteeing the quality and excellence standards at our university.

The IQS Quality System Manual can be found here.
